Checking the engine
sensor air gap
Notes
The engine sensor is designed
to read the teeth of the timing
layshaft gear and is able to determine
engine speed by virtue of the gap
between two adjacent teeth.
If the generator, generator cover or
sensor itself has been replaced, the
air gap must be checked as follows.
Remove screw plug (B) from the
LH-side casing inspection hole.
Important
Do not perform the check at
thegap between the teeth.
Insert a feeler gauge (A) through the
hole, positioning it between the end of
sensor (8) and the timing lay gear teeth.
Check that the air gap is 0.75 - 0.95 mm.
If not, slacken off the screw (1)
securing the sensor (8) so as to
extract the shim (9) and replace it
with one of suitable thickness.
Notes
The form of the shim (9) means
that it can be removed even with the
coolant pump cover installed, without
the need to remove the sensor (8).
Three shims of different colours are
available as shown in the figure.
Tighten screw (1) to the specified
torque (Sect. C 3).
Refit plug (B) with seal (C) and tighten
to the specified torque (Sect. C 3). B
